Advantage of WS2801/WS2811/WS2812 strip light

The WS2801 uses a separate clock line, which can be seen as an advantage, whereas the WS2811/WS2812 does not. The WS2811/WS2812 depends on sending data matching a very tight timing. The advantage of the WS2812 though, is that production is easier and therefor cheaper, and each RGB LED takes much less space on strips.

Overview of WS2801 LED Strip

WS2801 LED strip is an external IC pixel LED strip , which can program constant LED drive current. It has 4 pins including positive , negative , data and clock line. Usually made to DC5v and 32leds per meter.

What you need to know: WS2081 mainly consists of serial shift register, data latch, output register, bandgap reference voltage generator, internal oscillator and programmable constant output current driver.

WS2801 supports both constant voltage and constant current drive modes. If you are on a budget then it is perfect for a low cost LED decorative LED lighting system.

Overview of WS2811 LED Strip 

WS2811 strip light is an external IC programmable LED strip too with 3 pins with positive, negative and data line. Usually made to DC12v. Built-in voltage regulator, add a resistor to IC VDD pin only when power is 24V. Regular is 30 leds and 60leds per meter.

WS2811 has a built-in signal shaping circuit, which is sent to the next driver after shaping to ensure that waveform distortion does not accumulate. Built-in power reset circuit and power-down reset circuit.

WS2811 is a single-wire cascade port to transmit signals. The distance between any two points is more than 10m to transmit signals without any additional circuits.

Overview of WS2812B LED Strip

WS2812B LED strip light is a built-in IC digital LED tape light with 3 pins including positive, negative and data line.  Voltage is DC5v input. Can be made to 30 pixels 60 pixels 74 pixels 96 pixels and 144 pixels per meter programmable strip light.

WS2812 is an intelligent control LED light source. The 5050 components integrated in the package integrate the control circuit and RGB chip of the WS2812. In order to ensure that the pixel point light color is highly consistent, an intelligent digital port data latch and a signal shaping amplifier drive circuit are configured.

WS2812B is an upgraded version based on WS2812. It not only has all the advantages of WS2812, but also better stability and efficiency.

WS2812B has more advantages than WS2812:

1. What Does a WS2801 LED Strip Do?

Answer: WS2801 is a constant current LED driver suitable for LED cascade applications. There are 3 output channels, each of which can drive a constant current up to 30mA.

2. What is the key difference between WS2811 and WS2812B?

Answer: WS2811 cannot control a single LED. This means that they cannot be controlled at a granularity of less than three LEDs. For comparison, each WS2812B can control one LED.

3. How much power does WS2811 and WS2812B use? 

Answer: WS2811 is 12V. Single channel 60 LEDs is 14.4 watts. While, WS2812B is 5V. Single channel 60 LEDs is 18 watts.

4. Can I connect WS2801, WS2811 and WS2812 LED light strips together?

Answer: You might try connecting different LED strips to each other, provided they have the same voltage. If you try to connect two or more strips with different voltages, they won't work at all and will be damaged. It's a waste of money and better not to do it.

5. Do WS2811 or WS2812b LED strip lights overheat?

Answer: Smart LED strips rarely burn out if you connect the strips correctly. However, if you have too many strips connected in series, you can overload the circuit. Because the total resistance will be too high, generating too much heat.

6. Is WS2812B LED strip RGB or RGBW?

Answer: Typically, WS2812b is RGB only. Sometimes advertising though advertises something as WS2812b, even though it's actually not. Because most people won't search for SK6812, but WS2812b because it's more popular. But this kind of error message is usually not a big deal because the SK6812 has the same protocol as the WS2812b. For addressable LED strips, WS2812B and SK6812 are generally considered to be the most commonly used.

7. How do I adjust the color of the WS2811 or WS2812b LED strip light?

Answer: You usually have the following options: ① Dimmer and controller with remote control ② In-line dimmer and controller ③ Knob dimmer for monochrome LED strips. The Monochrome controller lets you change the color, mode, speed or brightness of the strip. Monochrome dimmers let you adjust just the brightness of the strip.

8. How do I connect my WS2811 LED strip to the boat's power supply?

Answer: You can power the boat's WS2811 LED strip by connecting to the boat's 12V battery. Make sure your marine battery's power supply is compatible with the voltage of the WS2811 LED strip.

9. How can I prevent my WS2801, WS2811 or WS2812 LED strip from falling off?

Answer: Start by cleaning any dust, water, moisture, grease, or other things from the surface the LED strip will be mounted to. Cleaners such as methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol may help, but allow time to dry. You need to use a dry, lint-free cloth to properly clean the surface.

10. How to re-stick WS2801 or WS2812 LED strip with 3M adhesive backing?

Answer: To re-remove and stick the WS2812 light bar, first cut off the power and unplug the light bar. Then use a hair dryer to heat the adhesive. Answer: An LED strip description usually includes a 4-digit number, such as 5050 or 2835. This number usually defines the size of the chip. For example, a 5050 LED chip measures 5.0mm wide x 5.0mm high. Likewise, the 2835 chip measures 2.8mm wide x 3.5mm high.

19. Do ws2812b need resistors?

Answer: 5V high current power supply is OK for WS2812B LED strip. There is no current limiting resistor.

20. How bright is ws2812?

Answer: Both LEDs draw about 60mA at maximum brightness, so power supplies used for WS2812B set-ups are interchangeable. Of course, the number of LEDs on the strip varies and the power required is different.

23. What should I do if my LED strip is blinking?

Answer: Make sure the cables from the power supply to the LED strips are connected correctly and are not missing. You might also consider soldering the connections in place so they don't move around.

24. How do I determine if a WS2812 LED strip is good?

27. Is there a difference between the maximum voltage of WS2812 and WS2812B?

Answer: Both are approximately between 3.3V and 5V. The WS2812 should work anywhere between about 4V and 7V, while the WS2812B should work anywhere between about 3.3V and 5V. 5V is available on most boards. For example, the 5V header on the Arduino board is the perfect voltage supply for LEDs.

28. How many amps does a WS2812B use?

Answer: The supply we need must be 5 volts, however the shape and amperage they provide can vary greatly. Barrel jack connectors are necessary for Wall wrats (typically 0.5-2 amp)  and power brick (typically 1-10 amp) supplies.

29. How do I power my long WS2812B LED strip?

Answer: The LED strip should be powered with a 5V power supply. At 5V, each LED consumes about 50mA when set to full brightness. This means that for every 30 LEDs, the strip may draw up to 1.5 A. Make sure to choose a power supply that matches your strip's needs.
